Changes or Criteria Notes to Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS)
Paragraph # and Title (if any) Note to Designer Change Text
Note that the UFGS cancelled this section in 2015 and replaced it with 08 01 52 entitled Operation and Maintenance of Wood Windows. Only use this older version for contracts that already have the older 08 52 70 incorporated in the specifications. For all other contracts, including new ones, use 08 01 52 instead.
PART 3 EXECUTION Add the following paragraph: 3.1 GENERAL

The Contractor shall repair wood windows as indicated, and shall return them to proper operation and sound condition. A historic color analysis may be directed by PW before any paint removal.  The Contractor is also reminded of the likelihood of lead in old paint coatings.  Refer to the appropriate specification section for abatement.  Any broken glazing lites in historic windows should be replaced using existing similar pieces of glass from salvaged windows, if possible.  If such assets are not available, use similar glass, with waviness or imperfections matching adjacent glazing as closely as possible.  Do not install felt weather stripping, it retains moisture near the wood.  Avoid vinyl, foam and surface mounted type weather stripping.

Design Requirements
  1. Where new or replacement windows are required at buildings in the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Historic District, designers shall refer to "Maintenance and Repair Manual For Historic Structures at Fort Lewis, Washington", Section 7.0. Wood windows replaced or added in structures within the Fort Lewis Historic District must also conform as closely as possible to existing (see attached sketches for examples). The use of vinyl or aluminum clad window types for replacement in historic buildings is not recommended. Any consideration of replacement types other than "in-kind" wood must first be coordinated with the State Historic Preservation Officer through Environmental and Natural Resources Division, Public Works, Fort Lewis.
  2. Any repairs to existing wood windows to remain must be made carefully. A historic color analysis may be directed by PW before any paint removal. The designer is also reminded of the likelihood of lead in old paint coatings. The specification should identify this probability and refer the contractor to the appropriate specification section for abatement. Acceptable removal methods include water soluble chemical strippers, hot air gun or heat plate. Use no open flame or sharp chisels/scrapers. Old glass is particularly susceptible to breakage when heated. See UFGS SECTION 08 52 70 for wood restoration techniques before repainting. Any broken glazing lites in historic windows should be replaced using existing similar pieces of glass from salvaged windows, if possible. If such assets are not available, use similar glass, with waviness or imperfections matching adjacent glazing as closely as possible. The designer is reminded of the likelihood of asbestos in old window putty. The specification should identify this probability and refer the contractor to the appropriate specification section for abatement. Do not install felt weather stripping, it retains moisture near the wood. Avoid vinyl, foam and surface mounted type weather stripping.
