2.3.3   Weather stripping Add the following for historic buildings. Do not install felt weather stripping, as it retains moisture near the wood. Avoid vinyl, foam and surface mounted type weather stripping.

Design Requirements
  1. Where new or replacement doors are required at buildings in the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Historic District, designers shall refer to "Maintenance and Repair Manual For Historic Structures at Fort Lewis, Washington", Section 6.0. Doors replaced or added in structures within the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Historic District must conform as closely as possible in materials and appearance to those existing (see attached sketches for examples). Specify solid wood, panel type doors wherever possible. Any glazed areas should be wood-stopped, with muntins providing true divided lites where glazing occurs.
  2. Any repairs to existing wood doors to remain must be made carefully. A historic color analysis may be directed by PW before any paint removal. The designer is also reminded of the likelihood of lead in old paint coatings. The specification should identify this probability and refer the contractor to the appropriate specification section for abatement. Remove old paint with scraper, hot air gun or chemical strippers. Do not use open flame. Repaint only sound wood (See UFGS 08612 for wood restoration techniques). Do not install felt weather stripping, it retains moisture near the wood. Avoid vinyl, foam and surface mounted type weather stripping.
  3. New wood doors on Joint Base Lewis-McChord shall primarily be 1" thick, 7'-0" high, 5-ply, flush, solid core units. Doors shall be paint grade except for special applications. Doors to receive paint finish shall be economy grade, doors receiving natural finish shall be custom grade, birch veneer. Doors shall be rated as and where required by Fire Codes.
